Julian Sale Photography

I joined DuPont in 1967 having graduated in mechanical engineering from the University of Waterloo. I started in the polyethylene business at the research and technical labs in Kingston and from there went on to various sales, marketing, and management roles in Montreal, Toronto, and Mississauga.

In 1996, DuPont sold its medical imaging business, which was incorporated as a new business called Sterling Diagnostic Imaging Inc with me as Managing Director.

After 3 successful years as Sterling Diagnostic Imaging, we were purchased by Agfa Inc (one of the 3 major imaging companies in the world, similar in size to Kodak and Fuji). I was appointed Vice-President Medical Imaging at Agfa Inc in Canada.

I retired from Agfa in 2002. Since my wife, Maggie, is originally from England and we love travelling there, we bought a home in a small Cumbrian village called Kirkby Lonsdale in the northwest of England. Honeysuckle cottage is ideally situated between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, two of the prettiest parts of England. Since retirement, we have spent 4 to 5 months a year there. After 14 lovely years at Honeysuckle, we finally decided to sell in the spring of 2015 in order to focus more on other travels.

A major hobby Maggie and I both share is photography, which is a great hobby to have when you also love travelling. Although not a full-time business, we have been successful with photographic exhibitions, presentations, print sales, and publications. If the truth be known, Maggie more so than I.

My other photography related hobby is designing websites, which I have done for Maggie, myself, our camera club, other club members, businesses, and other non-profit organizations. Also since retirement, I have volunteered as Vice President and board member at DAREarts Foundation Inc., a charitable organization dedicated to empowering at-risk children through learning and experiences in all the arts. I have recently from the Board but still support this great organization.

Maggie and I are keen outdoors people with activities ranging from hiking mountains in England to wilderness canoeing on Georgian Bay in Canada. I have taken up bicycling for the past several years.

In 2009, we moved from Toronto to Guelph where I have been on the board of Third Age Learning Guelph (TALG) in a variety of positions including Webmaster and Chair.  I'm also actively involved with a similar organization called Summer Lectures Club. In addition, I am on the Board of the Royal City Men's Club at which I chair the Speakers Committee.  I volunteer at Third Age Network (TAN) where I have contributed to the visioning process and other projects.

Having spent many great years with Etobicoke Camera Club, we are now members of Grand River Imaging & Photographic Society in Kitchener-Waterloo.

With 3 grandchildren close by in Waterloo, we are enjoying another rewarding part of retirement.
